Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, including those produced in China, have several advantages that make them a popular choice for various applications:

  1. Affordability: Batteries account for about 30 to 40% of the total cost of an electric vehicle (EV). The components of LiFePO4 batteries, such as iron and phosphates, are more common and less expensive than the nickel and cobalt used in other types of batteries. This abundance allows for more significant production quantities and reduced costs1.

  2. Sustainability and Human Rights: Iron and phosphates are abundant, reducing the need for ecosystem disruption to obtain them. Additionally, promising recycling initiatives may be able to reuse many components of a LiFePO4 battery once it reaches the end of its operational life1.

  3. Longevity: Over their operating life, LiFePO4 batteries can deliver nearly five times as many discharge cycles as other types of batteries1.

  4. Safety: LiFePO4 batteries are inherently more stable than other lithium battery types. They handle higher temperatures better and don’t decompose like other lithium chemistries tend to do.

  5. Market Acceptance: The market share for LiFePO4 batteries grew fivefold, from just 6% in 2020 to 30% in 20221.

China has been at the forefront of LiFePO4 battery production, contributing to its global reputation for quality in this field. However, it’s important to note that the quality of LiFePO4 cells can vary based on the manufacturing processes and quality control measures of individual manufacturers, regardless of their location.
